Introducing DJ Derek Ale

We have introduced a beer in memory of a Bristol legend.

With his white hair, thick-rimmed spectacles, and cardigan, Derek James Serpell-Morris - fondly referred to as DJ Derek - became something of a reggae icon and earned himself a cult following in the process.

DJ Derek loved playing in Wetherspoons pubs up and down the country, including the Commercial Rooms in Bristol. It was here where the idea first came about. Derek was well know for enjoying dark ales, this lead us on to producing the 4.8%ABV premium bitter which was released on the 21st of April on the day of his funeral. The ale has been going very well and can be found in may Bristol pubs. We have decided to produce the ale in 500ml bottles which will hopefully be available at the beginning of July 2016.

5 pence in ever pint sold is a donation to the Trinity Center charity.

Welcome To GWB

We are a family run brewery on the outskirts of Bristol, just off from the M32. We are a 10 barrel brewery with the ability to produce 360 gallons of beer daily. We have converted the Old Turners Bakery into a show-piece brewery with a shop at the front.

Beer was always a dream of Kevin (founder of GWB). Ideas of putting a brew plant next to the pub (The Rising Sun, Frampton Cotterell) had always been in the back of his mind until an old derelict bakery (Turners bakery, Hambrook) went up for sale in 2006. It was quickly snapped up and so became The Great Western Brewing Company Ltd.

Our Beers are always changing and evolving with the trends and new brewing techniques. We believe in constant evolution of our beers, striving to get the most out of our brews. If you haven’t tried our beers in a while we definitely suggest trying them again as they will most certainly be different from the last time you tried them.

A little bit about what we are doing

We believe in 'Hand-Crafted' beer. The Great Western Brewing Company is a microbrewery brewery based in Bristol. We brew beer that is unfiltered, unpasteurized and full of flavour – the sort of beer we enjoy drinking and we hope you enjoy drinking, too.

We are a small, family run independent brewery, and we brew all our beer ourselves, on site with our own borehole.

We are of course as committed to the quality of our brewing as we are to our social and business responsibilities.  It is really important to us that our beers are brewed with the best freshest ingredients to produce the highest possible standards of quality, consistency and flavour.  We are passionate about our beer and real ale in general and want you to be too.  Please don’t hesitate to give us a shout with any questions, or get in touch to arrange a visit, we’d love to see you. We listen to our customer feedback and where we can mould our beers into the best shape they could possibly be. We don't cut corners or neglect the little things that make beer great! Above all else quality comes first.

Occasion for beer?

If there is any occasion that you feel good real ales would be a much welcome guest, such as Weddings, birthdays, BBQ's or even  just stock for the man cave then you have come to the right place. We can tailor for almost any taste. If you let us know what your tastes are we can recommend a beer  for you there and then. All of our range are smooth and delicately different, you wont be disappointed.

Our shop at the front of the building has up to 5 of our ales on at any time.

With fresh bright Draught beer ready to be poured into 2 or 3 litre plastic bottles, 5, 10 or 20 litre bag in box or a 40 litre firkin (stainless steel cask). See our price list here.

Your opinion matters!

Feedback is our best tool for gauging what needs improving and what doesn’t.

We would love to know what you though of your experience with us. Please leave us a review on Trip Advisor
